DUE TO AN OVERWHELMING NUMBER OF REQUESTS, WE ARE EXTENDING THE APPLICATION DEADLINE UNTIL TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25 AT MIDNIGHT.
The Defenders of Potential Advocacy and Leadership Development Program (Defenders Program) aims to develop a group of leaders from all walks of life to help us advocate and become a voice for the mission and vision of Big Brothers Big Sisters throughout the community.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Participants will not be "BIGs"while they are in the Defenders Program. Instead, we will ask participants to help advocate for the program and our mission, volunteer at various events, help educate the community, and compete with each other in fundraising goals. We want you to become a lifelong advocate of Big Brothers Big Sisters!
In addition to various volunteer opportunities, we will hold several classes on various leadership topics that participants can learn from and use throughout their careers.
The Defenders program is an eight-month program, from April to November.
There is a maximum of 60 participants per Defenders class with three levels of participants:
High School Students (at least 16 years of age)
Full-Time College Students
Each participant will be required to meet volunteer and fundraising goals, but don't worry; we'll provide several fundraising opportunities to help you raise money. We will also provide ideas on ways you can raise money on your own!
There are five events for the program (not including volunteer opportunities):
Initial Meet and Greet & Initiation (April 4)
Leadership Class 1 (May 9)
Leadership Class 2 (Aug 1)
Leadership Class 3 (Oct 24)
Recognition and Awards Dinner (Nov 14)
Each participant will be asked to pay $10 once admitted into the program to cover the cost of materials.
ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION
Participants are required to attend the Initial Meet and Greet to get initiated into the program. Participants can only miss one of the leadership classes. Additionally, we will require at least eight (8) hours of volunteer time.
We're excited to announce that Odell Nickelberry, VP Human Resources at Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield will serve as our 2020 Defenders of Potential executive honoree! Mr. Nickelberry will be at the April 4 Meet and Greet to help kick off the 2020 Defenders Class and meet participants. He will also join us for one of the the leadership classes for Q&As with participants.
Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott, Jr. will join us as a special guest for the April 4 Meet and Greet to speak with and meet program participants.
